Valuing Resources Now

People often erroneously convince themselves that they will start valuing their resources when they have more. For example, they say that they would go to the gym if they had more time or they would take better care of their car if they had the car of their dreams. The misconception is that they never feel like they have enough because they focus only on the end goals without considering the smaller daily actions needed to achieve them. A couple was living in a rented one-bedroom apartment and said they’ll start valuing and managing their resources when they buy a house. After they buy that house, they’ll then move that end goal to when they pay off that house or when their kids go to college. The example above is commonplace today and can be replaced with a myriad of other excuses.

They should start by valuing what they have now while they are living in that one-bedroom apartment, and their goals should be focused on bringing more value to their current resources, no matter how small or limited they may be. After all, what may be one person’s limited resources may be someone else’s abundance. If you don’t believe that your limited resources may be someone else’s treasure, take a trip to some of the poorest countries in the world or watch a few videos on YouTube about them. No matter how bad you believe your situation may be, someone else is going through worse.

The truth is that you are not helping yourself or your situation by focusing on your lack of better resources. You will always feel better by focusing on the good in that moment. You have a roof over your head while someone else is sleeping in the rain; you have a car while someone else is walking or riding public transportation an hour or more to get work, etc. While your resources may seem to be limited relative to the resources you choose to compare them to, the secret to a more successful life is to value what you have now. Don’t wait until you have more. Be grateful in the moment for that moment.
